Grand Parade

2011 Freedom through Service and Sacrifice

The 60th annual Grand Parade will be held on July 23, 2010 at 6:00 P.M. It begins at 1500 So Main Street and proceeds north on Main Street to 400 North.

The Parade is a big event with over 115 entries annually and over 60,000 spectators! Entries are sponsored by churches, civic groups, businesses, and others. Over 200 volunteers make it happen on parade day. Hundreds of others begin making preparations months before the parade.

I want to thank a lot Hams with cool heads that make for a long and hot Handcart Days Parade.
I know there were a lot of issues this year, and with the help of the Parade committee and the city of Bountiful, we hope to fix them! I met with the Chief of Police on Tuesday, and will meet with the Parade in two weeks, to discuss the problems we encountered.

The Parade committee, (LDS church) Thanked US many times for the help. They feel that without us the show would not go on.

I want to give a special thanks to the Net controls, Mike Groves, Bob Craven, Brent Thomas, and the Dynamic duo, Ann and Hal Blankenship. I hope to have you all back next year. They were coordinating much of the behind-the-scenes magic that makes the parade run.
They were at the Five Points Roundabout on 1500 South and the Rite aid Parking lot. Preparations started in March for this year’s parade and we still had a few issues.

I learned a lot of great things this year; I hope you learned something to. This is why we do the exercises. We have to remember that we are just communicators and have little authority.

Please get involved with RACES, ARES, ERC and CERT (Certified Emergency Response Team), which was the original reason for the DCARC.

We had our start in 1983, the year the big floods hit Bountiful, Farmington, please take the time to come out and train at these exercises’.
THANK_YOU again to everyone who helped me makes our part of the parade a success  !!!!!

(Maps, line- up lists, instructions). Assembly people should bring a Vest, clipboard, PA stations need clip board and some sticky notes to write on and then they can hand it to the announcers.     RADIO FREQUENCES FOR THE PARADE WILL BE: PA STATIONS 145.57, ASSEMBLY AREA  147.42/449.925 REPEATER

PARADE BEGINS PROMPTLY AT 6:00 PM

NOTE: The staging area will be blocked off to “through traffic” after 4:00 p.m. on thursday, July 23. “Parade Officials” will be in orange vests and are there to assist you and give you directions.

Streets will be closed to traffic. Participants can be dropped off and proceed on foot to assigned areas. Participants are advised to carpool. An adult should accompany children to the assigned area to guarantee their connection with their leader. No Exception!

Notes for the prade volunteers.

  • Put an identifying name on your entry prior to the parade.
  • Park your entry in your assigned space. Your staging position is marked on the street and is indicated on the map. If you have any questions, contact a volunteer.
  • Make sure all entry participants know their entry number.
  • It is critical that you enter the staging area from the right direction. There is no turn-around space. Large entries are advised to come early to assure ease in getting into position. (Big floats and larger trailers should arrive by 4:30 p.m.).
  • Entries enter off State Road 106 and 1800 South. Those who are lining up on 200 West and Main Street enter at 1800 South and SR 106. Parade officials will be there to help you.
  • Entrants must be in position by 5:00 p.m. This is imperative! The parade will start on time! If you miss your entry spot, you will be shifted to the end of the parade. Allow for increased traffic.
  • Review your Parade Requirements (rules). Violations could cause the police to pull your entry from the parade.
  • Do not begin distribution of wrapped candy until you are past 200 West. Do not throw candy from moving vehicles. Persons walking next to your entry may distribute candy to the crowd.
  • All entries must keep moving. No stopping for routines, etc. You must maintain a space of 75 ft. between you and the entry in front of you. Parade walkers will accompany your entry to help maintain the appropriate space. Please respond to officials’ request to fill any gap.
  • The parade starts at Five Points (1500 South and Main Street), proceeds north along Main Street to 400 North then west on 400 North to 100 West then south on 100 West. DO NOT STOP after making the turn onto 100 West until instructed to do so.
  • Motorized vehicles should proceed south three or more blocks. This will facilitate safe parking and sufficient space for subsequent entries and parent pick up.

BANDS ZONE: enter from Orchard Drive, proceed west on 1500 South to 50 West, turn left and unload in the Bountiful Elementary School parking lot. Buses proceed south on 50 West to 1800 South. Turn right and proceed to State Road 106, turn right and proceed north to the pick-up point, Meadowbrook Elementary School, 700 North 325 West. The best route to Meadowbrook Elementary School (colored on your map) is south to 1800 South, west to 500 West, north to 400 North, east to 325 West and north to the school. Band members will be directed from the parade route across 200 West to Meadowbrook Elementary School for bus reloading.

HORSE ZONE:  take the #318 (Bountiful-Woods Cross) exit, turn east and go to Hwy 89 and then turn north. Stay in the far right lane (SR#106) and go to 1500 South. (Wells Fargo Bank on corner). Turn east and proceed to Main Street. Turn left on Main Street and take an immediate left on 200 West northbound to your assigned position. After dropping off your horses and/or carriages, your transportation vehicles should then proceed to the church parking lot at 200 West and 200 North, where there is reserved parking for loading your animals, wagons, etc. following the parade. Note the location on the map. Please provide protection or a “pooper scooper” for your entry.

PRIMARY CHILDREN meet at Bountiful Elementary (1620 South 50 West). Primary children must have their entry number attached to their clothing. This will help you assemble them. After meeting at the school, please walk them to the designated area. Bring water and any treats you desire. Shade tents or covers are suggested. It will be hot. Do not allow children to stray or cross the street. Restrooms are available in the park.

Make sure parents understand where to meet and resume care of their children after the parade. NEVER leave children unattended. Stay with them until parents arrive to pick them up.

We truly appreciate your participation in this parade and for your compliance with these guidelines. We hope you enjoy your experience in the 2010 Handcart Days Parade.
